I went to IRISA as usual in the morning although today was supposed to be an off day. On the way, I saw tents all over the places and people were sleeping in their cars. Cars were parked everywhere on the grass. Looked like they had a big party last night. Then I remembered last night at 3am, I was awakened by noises along the corridor. In the office, I saw hui online and he too had gone back to office. Sad. No life. I told him about the hotel issue and was glad that he was ok with it. Nico was also back in the office and he sent me a link with details of Bruce Lee. He walked past my room and came in to talk to me about Bruce Lee. He said in fact Bruce Lee had 4 names and Siu Long is the most famous one. I didn’t know. Maybe I should intro him to my dad as he likes Bruce Lee also. For me, Bruce’s actions were too exaggerating.
Then I called Mr. Giant and asked him about the trip tomorrow. He said he is still unsure of the details. But he said we are definitely going unless it rains heavily. If I didn’t receive any email by today, I should call tomorrow morning to confirm. Ok. Guess I have to come back tomorrow again. Then I made a call to the student who wanted to do my exp. His name is Kwan Meng, a France Born Chinese. He said his parents are Teochew. I am a Teochew too but too bad I can’t speak my dialect. He said he could do the exp today at 4pm. I said ok, although it was a bit late for me. At lunchtime, I asked Nico to eat with me but he said he will be meeting some friends. He would be riding there and has only one helmet. So I went to the restaurant and as expected, it was closed. I went back to INSA to cook rice again and now I am really sick of luncheon. Later when I go to the supermart in the evening, I think I would buy some fresh meat.
The whole afternoon was spent chatting with hui as I had finished my 3rd progress report. No more work. I just had to wait till 4pm to pick up Kwan Meng. Great to hear that I would be able to get some serials from hui soon because I am quite sick of anime and am finishing my movies. Near 4pm, I went back to INSA to meet Kwan Meng. He came with 3 other friends and all said they are willing to help. Wow. Now I have excess people. I needed 10 for one exp and might need another 10 for another exp. But I have to finish the first one in order to know if the second is needed. On the way we chatted a bit and Kwan Meng although is a French, speaks quite good English. So is his written English when he did the questionnaire. I brought them into the lab hoping I wouldn’t meet the security guard.
In the end, only Kwan Meng and his friend Antoine did the exp. 2 other guys, Martin and Florent (not sure spelling) had to go somewhere else. I didn’t have the chance to chat much with Kwan Meng because he had to rush off too. But we did exchange a few sentences in Mandarin. I asked if he speaks Mandarin and he said, ”wo hui jiang Guo Yu”. And he can speak Tehchew as well and was a bit surprised that I can’t. Really embarrassing not to know my dialect. He said we should meet some other time to chat. Good. This is what I want. Meet and get to know more people. Feeling very tired, I didn’t want to analyse the results and thought of leaving them till Monday. Enough work on a holiday. I went to Leader Price and this time bought some pork and ham.
Back in INSA, while cooking my spaghetti, my neighbours came in and were going to have a feast. They always cooked in a large group and will have to use up all the stoves. I was using the one that was the fastest and hottest. I wanted to hurry up but also had to make sure that my pork was well cooked. While they were cutting and preparing their food, I asked one of them if he has read my poster on the door. He said yes and I told him if he is interested, he can look for me anytime. Actually I had enough participants already for now. By Monday I would have completed everything. I asked him the question because I hope to strike a conversation with this group of people. Maybe they would start asking me some questions since now they know I am from Singapore and am working in IRISA. But they didn’t and turned back to chat among themselves again. Sigh… I guess I would never be able to know my neighbours. All those people in my residence that I know are those who are working or doing their attachments in IRISA also. Kwan Meng and his gang seem friendly enough. And they were very young, 18 years old only. Can tell they were young because they were pretty excited when I brought them to the lab. Hope I can know more and more people within this last one and half month. 1.5 month! Wah! Time really flies…
