16 February - Maximus (Day 29)

After spending just 15 min on personal stuffs, I immersed myself in work completely until lunch. I have been coming to work earlier now (from 10am to 945am) and leaving later (from 5pm to 615pm) and spending lesser time on surfing the net. Workload is getting heavier and I must say I am really not that good in programming. Back in NTU whenever the lab requires us to write programs, I can always refer to Weishen or Ah Teck or Weiqiang when I am stuck. There would always be someone to rely on for tips and hints although I always try to finish everything on my own without “cut and paste”. Here I have to come up with the algorithm myself and the other colleagues wouldn’t be of much help because we are all doing different stuffs. Sometimes I am so stuck that my mind just blank out. And my supervisor for most of the time is not around. But I won’t ask for his help until the last moment.

It was the same group of us going for lunch (now got a group of lunchtime kakis) and we left quite early at 1155am to avoid the crowd. Sure enough there weren’t many people there and I can have a good look at what food is available. You can take one whole pizza here but I didn’t because I don’t think I could finish. Having learnt a lesson yesterday, I took 1 ticket worth of food this time. I had a breaded fillet and thought it was fish but they told me it was turkey meat. It was nice. I am always amused when Jean-Marie is eating with us because he will talk a lot and is always very animated. He would act and imitate and create a lot of facial expressions. He reminds me of Jim Carrey. Although I didn’t understand what he was saying, I find him funny still. And he had a pair of cool light blue eyes.

Back in the office I was busy with work again until 330pm when I really felt tired and needed some rest. I had completed about a quarter of the code but was quite stuck then. So I surf the net to see if there are any other interesting places to visit besides St Malo and Mont St Michel. There are in fact quite a lot of castles in Bretagne and one of them is in a city called Vitre. It is very near to Rennes, less than half an hour by train. I guess I would visit it this Sunday since the weather is still not very good for a trip to St Malo. Most of the places of interest recommended in the website were pretty near to Rennes geographically. But not all are accessible by train. For those who drive here, it would be very easy. Later I chatted with Zhiwei who is doing his IA in Shanghai under the GIP. He said he need not submit a report and said that he doesn’t know his purpose there. I guess is to tour and enjoy life. He said he doesn’t think that he would learn much there but I think it is all about gaining experiences. I must say I learn quite a bit here in work as well as in life. I am already familiar with C++ programming and it is not the syntax that I am picking up here. I am already equipped with the necessary programming skills and comfortable with for-loop, if-else, etc. It is the thinking, the algorithm however that I am learning. How I can piece the syntaxes together to make the program run.

Mathieu popped in awhile later and said that tomorrow they might be playing indoor soccer and asked me to bring some sports wear. They would leave together after work and would come and call me. Hope this time I really got to play. Moreover, it is indoor so I can wear my shorts. I hope they would bring me to some place to eat after the game because I needed some good food. After work, I went back and watch Gladiator which I borrowed from IRISA. Russell Crowe really is convincing playing the role Maximus. He performed so well and his eyes could display courage, strength and sometimes sadness. Initially I chose the audio as French and subtitles as English. But I couldn’t stand it when Russell said “Rester avec moi!” (“stay with me!”). It sounded weird so I switched back to English. It was all about glory and beliefs and Russell in the end became a martyr. Although I have watched it so many times, I was still moved. I have always fantasized about being born in the medieval times (be it Europe or China), where there are sword fights and horses riding. Perhaps that is why I enjoyed such shows so much and read the “San Guo Yan Yi”. Perhaps that is also why I choose to come to France instead of other countries for my IA.

PS: I don’t know where to insert this line in my blog so I shall just write it here. “Strength and honor” (a line in Gladiator and I really like it).
