The night before, Laurent came at around 1130pm and said that his friends just left Paris. Which meant they would only arrive at around 2am. Gosh! I told him I would go back and sleep and when they arrived, just come and look for me. So I went back and sleep and at 230am, Laurent came and he looked all ready to go. I was dead sleepy and asked him to wait for me at the carpark. I will be there shortly. After washing up, I took my already packed bag and went to the carpark, still feeling dreamy. Laurent and his 2 friends were already waiting around the car. A girl was sitting at the front passenger seat with her legs on the outside, drinking beer and smoking. Her name was Alice. The other friend was a botak with specs. Looked very “Lao Shi” that kind of guy. His name was Nicolas. Both of them were from Paris and were flatmates.
After some short intro, we were off in Nico’s car. It will be a long ride as it takes about 2.5 hrs on average. The coast we were heading to is called Perros Guirec, northwest of Rennes. Throughout the ride, we were listening those punk rock music, and they were yelling and shouting in the car. Alice was drinking and smoking. I thought: Gosh. I am stuck with a bunch of punksters! Maybe they would smoke marijuana later. It was like those kind of gypsies in the past, group of mad young people driving along the highway, blasting crazy music. Nico said he would be doing his thesis for his masters in September. He majored in Chemistry. As for Alice, her profession was least of what I expected. She was a nurse. Kao. A nurse who smokes and drinks and listen to punk music.
After a deafening ride, we finally reached Perros Guirec at around 5am. Along the way, I can already see part of the beach but it was too dark. Soon we arrived at Laurent’s house which was a bungalow in a small neighbourhood. It wasn’t those rich mansion on top of the cliff by the sea. But it was more than enough. He had a big living room with a nice fireplace. Then he brought us upstairs and showed our rooms. Alice had a room to herself of course. Nico and I shared another. And Laurent showed us his toys also. Lots of them. He used to spend his childhood in this chalet. But because his father works for the army, his family has to shift location every 4 years. However, this chalet is always here and whenever anyone of them is free, he will come here to enjoy. I said goodnight to Nico and Alice and went to bed. But it was already 6am. The sun is out and the birds are out.

I slept until 10am and instinctively couldn’t sleep anymore because of the sun. I went downstairs and took a good look at his living room. He had paintings on the walls, lots of books on pictures of the north coast of Brittany. I read them one by one until I was too cold to stay there. I went upstairs and buried myself under the sleeping bag. That’s when Nico woke up and we decided to go out and find Laurent. At his garden, we met his brother (George I think) who just came early in the morning and was servicing his bicycle. Laurent came out from another house. So he has 2 houses. The 3 guys (me, Laurent and Nico) made breakfast with coffee and French loaf. And we chatted on life and getting rich. Nico said he had a friend who was not close at all. This friend was rather stupid and was just a mechanic. But he managed to strike a fortune by selling some modified cars or something like. Basically he just got rich out of sheer luck and bought a house by the sea. Nico and another friend were invited to the party and everyone there was rich except the two of them. They were all talking about arts, painting, and acting very high-class. He felt really frustrated at that party. He felt that the rich guy had no skills, no intelligent, no class, not a good person at all, but somehow was just filthy rich. On the other hand, Nico was good in music, doing his masters, but was poor. And he thought: What the fuck am I doing all these for? Haha. Almost every guy has this thinking before when we see someone who is just an average guy but has all he wants.

Nico said he is afraid that the more he stayed in Paris, the more he would become like the Parisians; self-centred. He said it is something he can’t avoid. Even with conscious effort, he can’t prevent himself from becoming like one of them if he stays longer. Hence, he wanted to get out of Paris as soon as he finished his studies. As we were chatting, we heard cracking sounds from the wooden staircase and our beauty queen came down with her still dreamy eyes. Alice was really treated like a princess; with bread prepared for her, Nico would pour coffee for her. Nico and Alice were like buddies. Alice always laughed at Nico and said he is a homosexual. And Nico would slap her head and point middle finger right in her face. But sometimes he is very gentleman to her. Pour coffee for her, let her have the chair, open the car door, etc. Funny duo.
After quite a full breakfast, we were all ready to go to the beach. It was already past 1pm. We didn’t change into swim wear because although there was sun, the wind was quite strong and cold. On the way to the beach, we dropped by a creperie and Laurent went out to make a reservation at 9pm. Then we proceeded on to the beach. The best thing about this trip is Laurent stayed here for a long time and knew almost everything about the place. Hence he brought us to places where we can have a nice view of the sea. It was indeed very refreshing standing on top of the cliff, looking down at the beach, the sea and enjoying the wind. Laurent would tell us the names of the islands and names of some famous rocks. He knew all these because he used to sail here and worked in the sailing school as instructor before.

We spent like 2 hours at the beach and decided to go back. But before that, we went to the supermarket to top up some food supply. Back in the house, Laurent brought out a few foldable chairs and we just sat in the garden, eating and drinking rum. It wasn’t just pure rum. It was mixture of rum, apricot and orange juice and sugar syrup. It was still quite strong because Laurent added 1 litre of rum into the pot. Laurent and Nico were playing the guitar while Alice and I just sat there enjoying the sun and the music. The 2 guys really played fantastically. It is no surprise given the fact that they played quite often “live” on stage in bars and mini concerts. There were lots of small white flowers in the garden and Alice picked a few of them and made them into a stick of flowers. A crazy girl still has a sweet side of her.

Soon I was feeling giddy because of the effect of the rum. I lied on the chair and slept (or half sleep), sun tanning at the same time. Alice began reading her book. The 2 musicians played non stop. When it was past 6pm, I woke up and we were ready to explore the coast again. The sun was still there shining brightly. We went to the famous Pink Rocks which is a coast with lots of large reddish boulders. There I saw the statue of St Guirec. Laurent said there is a legend saying that if you manage to put a needle into the nose of the statue, you will get married in that year. I went over and saw that the nose of St Guirec was almost gone. I wonder if Laurent was bluffing. The seawater at the Pink Rocks was crystal clear. Alice took off her shoes and socks and walked in the water. Another beautiful side of her usual crazy funky image. We then came to the part with the most amount of pink boulders and with Laurent leading the way, we climbed from rock to rock to get as close to the crashing waves as possible. Along the way, we had hundred and one different hilarious pose for my camera.

The sight of the waves crashing against the rocks was magnificent. It was not those super duper big waves but still grand enough. There was a lighthouse there and another small house with a tower. Laurent said that house with a tower belongs to the grandfather of his friend. And that house is very famous and can be found on postcards. One thing marvellous about the rocks is that they have different kind of weird shapes. Some looked like a fist, others like a face, and one of them looked like a cola bottle. There was another that was called the “dice”. At eight plus, we decided to climb our way back and headed for the creperie. I wasn’t looking forward to the creperie because that was the 3rd time I am having it. A bit sian already.

The interior of the creperie was designed like a cabin of a ship, with lifevests around and circular windows. Laurent said the things that represent Brittany most are those about the coast, the sea, sailing, ships, boats, lighthouses and such. This is because Brittany is a peninsular and has very beautiful coastline. After these nautical stuffs would perhaps be Celtic related stuffs. Before the dinner, Laurent asked me to try an alcohol called Muscart. It was very sweet but quite strong and is famous in France. I also tried another alcohol called Sausisson or something like that is famous in Brittany. It is honey alcohol but has a very weird taste. Throughout the dinner, we were playing very stupid games, similar to “black magic”, “open close” that kind of dumb games I used to play in OMC. That brought memory of last year’s OMC when I played such games throughout the night with Gary, zhiwei, huixian, alsa, zicai danny and shaosheng. Super funny. Esp. when gary, shaosheng and I ganged up to come out with our own stupid game called “running around the track”.
We were so full after the dinner that we couldn’t move and just sat there. Then we started to talk about vomits and the most disgusting encounter we ever had. Before we drink our alcohols and cidar, we had to toast. When I toasted with Alice, she said it is very important to look at her eyes if not I wouldn’t be able to have sex for seven years. The other guys said yes. But she said it’s ok for Nico for he is a gay. Hahaha. Stupid custom. After the dinner, we went to this bar by the sea. Nico and I ordered coca and Laurent ordered Orangina. Alice was the only one who ordered beer. She was having a hard time getting her cigarette lighted because the matchbox was spoilt. Again, Nico was the gentleman and went to the bar to ask for a box of matches. While drinking, we were telling each other jokes. Most of the time they were telling French jokes and Laurent would try to translate for me. But it wasn’t funny after the translation. Then Nico told us 2 racist jokes. Where is the borderline between mankind and animals? The Mediterranean sea. And one more: A white and a black are studying in a primary school. Who has a larger dick? The black. Because he is 36 years old. Very racist.
When we had enough fun, we decided to go back home. Back in the house, we were sitting on the cosy sofa in the living room and telling jokes again. It was dark and Laurent dimmed the light. So it was a very comfortable and soothing atmosphere. After 2am, we were really tired but couldn’t get out of the super comfortable sofa. With much determination, we managed to pull ourselves out and dragged our bodies to bed. I had seen so much of the coast today and I foresee tomorrow I would have not much to see. But I was wrong.
