30 May - Helping Ravi Again (Day 132)

I was taking my own sweet time organising the data obtained from the 6 experiments. These data are to be sent to the 3rd author of the paper, Jean-Marie who is a statistician from University of Paris 5. Then I decided to break and install a free antivirus which I got from the net. It is called Avast 4. While scanning my PC, Kadi came in and told me he just wanted to tell me that I did a great job for my presentation. I was very clear and articulate and I should continue to do that. I thanked him for his kind words and encouragement. It was lunch soon and I went with Mr. Giant and the 2 Nicolas. I told Mr. Giant that I couldn’t find him on Saturday at the carnival in city centre. Well I didn’t find hard enough actually because as I said it wasn’t very fantastic. He said that day was called Festival of Games in Rennes. Alright, there were many games then but not many people playing. After lunch, Nico gave me his comments on the work which I presented to them. We discussed a bit about the technique.

Then whole afternoon, I was still working on those results when xiaopei replied me and told me the plan for the Germany trip. She gave me a few hostels to look for. Then she told me that I need only to book for one night as 2 nights would be spent to and fro Berlin in the train. She is planning to take the night train which is like 8 to 9 hrs of ride! Initially I thought I can save on hostel cost for 2 nights. Then I realised that the train price was a horrible 49 euros each! Kao. She said the seat is those bed seat that we can sleep. I wouldn’t mind sleeping on a normal seat for a cheaper price. But then since she is in Germany, she should know better and so I let her decide. I don’t think I would get to see a lot in Munich also because by the time I return from Berlin, it would be Monday morning. And I would be damn tired. There is a famous castle outside Munich which is said to be the most famous in Germany. And inside Munich itself there are lots of things to see. Anyway, since everything is planned and booked already, I have to leave it as it is.

Ravi then emailed me asking for my help after 6pm on Java code. He said he wasn’t in the office but at home because he was not feeling well. He will however come later. Freak. I really don’t mind helping him but why does he have to make me do OT? I am free during office hours but not after that because I want to watch the “jiang si” show. Towards the end of the day, Ravi came and while I was packing to go with him, I received an email from Anatole. He had read my draft and made some comments on how I can improve. In fact, a lot of improvements to be done! And he said he has no time to make more comments. After reading them, I feel that the entire week would be spent on the paper. He even wanted me to find the Standard Deviation of the results! I thought all the data are to be sent to that 3rd guy to analyse?

I went with Ravi and met Rozenne, his colleague there. She came and helped with my experiment before and so I greeted her. What I had to do was to implement the JTable for him. Another reason why I didn’t feel like helping him is because he is a typical leech I feel. He made me work at night so that no one knows someone is helping him. And he probably told his boss that he had solved the problem. While explaining the function, he kept showing me those classes he created which in my eyes were peanuts; not worth any haolian. And I can conclude that he is not just incompetent in Java, he is not a programmer either. Probably he isn’t. I was really fed up while working because it was 8pm and I hadn’t had my dinner! And I want to watch Ma Siew Leng!

It came a point where I cannot take it anymore. Another reason why I am so fed up is because he doesn’t understand the codes well enough. There were probably hundred of classes and when I questioned him something about the functions, he couldn’t answer. Really what he needed of me was too in depth. Programming-wise, I am quite sure I can do it. But I don’t even know how the fuck all his classes were related! All I can do for him was the basic implementation which required not much knowledge of the entire program. Beyond that, it is up to him and his advisor. With his programming skills or lack of them, I am pretty sure he can’t do it. This I don’t blame him. But at least he needs to thoroughly look through everything before asking my help. After 2hrs, I felt that what I did was really simple and I asked him did he try hard enough in the first place. He said he did. Bullshit. He just wanted to “tou ji qu qiao”.

In the end, I said I can’t help anymore, and he promised he would re-look and try harder before approaching me next time. Try harder man. Besides knowing nuts about his program, my Java skills were really basic. I was reading the tutorial on GUI and JTable while helping him; learning and working at the same time. As a friend, Ravi is cheerful and good to talk to. As a colleague, I know this guy can only smoke and has no substance. I am really alright in helping anyone, but you must put in effort yourself in the first place. Besides work, we did chat a bit. He said that Indian guy from MIT whom I “offended” was a top scholar in India. He was the number one among 10000 students of some league of colleges and he was an idol for Ravi and people from his batch. He was someone who Ravi and his friends inspired to be.

Wow. Computer-wise he might be a genius. For other things else, I have my doubts. He then told me that he didn’t have to pay 130 euros deposit when he came to INSA because it was a policy not for people of IRISA. Kao! Will have to check that out tomorrow with the admin lady. Then he told me not to close the bank account because once I tell them I will be closing, the bank would put a lot of restrictions on my bank card. He said wait till I get back to SG then write a letter to them telling them to close the account. This I think he is bullshitting. It is written in the agreement that upon closure of account, I have to return my check book. He also told me that train ticket in Germany is very cheap and can be as cheap as 5 euros. For all trips. Shen Jin Bing. He said he would leave earlier by one month because he dislikes this place, mainly for the language. He said he has other places offering PhDs for him. This is one Dua Pao Xian whom I cannot trust. But for that 130 euros deposit, I would check it out. No harm asking.

I told him I prefer working during office hours then sparing personal time. He said he has some other stuffs to do in the day, like writing thesis for his masters, another paper, blah blah blah. Too bad man. I think I am being kind enough to have helped him for 2 nights. If he were to ask me again, I would say sorry: either work in the day or you do it yourself. Hope I wouldn’t be soft hearted in the end because with his calibre, I don’t think he can do the job.

PS: Star Wars II showing tonight on French TV. I was cooking and watching part of it on the TV in my kitchen. My neighbour was watching it then. But too bad, it was in French and so after cooking, I went back to watch Ma Siew Leng…
