Today Jeremy turned up just at the time when I hope he would not be here. I needed his PC to conduct experiments today! Normally I would log in to his and my PC so that I can run simulation using his PC and do the amendments on my one. I had to use his PC because his has an optical mouse while mine doesn’t and the USB ports on my PC are not working. And I had to switch on 2 PCs at a time because I can only make amendments and compile on my own PC as the program’s codes are installed there. So now it was a lot of trouble for me at work. Moreover, the CD writer of his PC is not working and hence I couldn’t upload my journal now. I had to wait till he knocked off then use back my own PC to do the uploading. Hope I can finish all the experiments quickly.
After lunch, my first customer for the day was supposed to come at 2pm. After waiting for 10 min I went to his office to find him and his colleague told me that he was sick and hence not in the office today. Wah! So coincidental! There was nothing I could do but to send him an email to arrange for another time. The next time slot for the experiment was at 4pm and so not wanting to wait for 2 hours, I emailed the next guy asking him if he could come at 3pm. At 230pm, the first sick guy suddenly turned up and said he will do the experiment now. Just when I wanted to email back to the second guy to ignore my earlier mail, he replied and said would come at 3pm. Really diu dua by the first guy. I decided to push for it hoping that the first sick guy can finish the experiment in half an hour time. Most probably he would need another 10 more min and I guess I have to entertain the second guy when he comes at 3pm.
It was pretty smooth sailing throughout the experiment and when the 2nd guy came, the 1st guy needed just 5 more min to finish the experiment. So I took that 5 min and brought the 2nd guy to another room where I briefed him about the procedures. In the end, both experiments went well. Except that the 2nd guy was noticeably grumpy when doing the experiment because it consists of 285 tests! When he reached the 100 tests mark, he thought it was over but too bad it wasn’t. When he reached the 200 tests mark, he was surprised that there were still more tests. When he crossed the 250 tests mark, I think he quite buay tahan already. But overall the experiment lasted only 26 min. Well to pacify them, I gave each a coffee sweet as a token of appreciation. But the 2nd guy didn’t seem to appreciate my little gesture of courtesy. Perhaps he was thinking I would pay him. Well as if I cared. Just hope that he doesn’t go around discouraging other people from doing my experiment.
The phone in my office suddenly rang and I thought must be Ahad’s family again. I picked up the phone and was surprised that it was for me. Oh yes, I had forgotten that I left my office phone no. in my email. One of the participants said that he is not free to come on the previously agreed time and so wanted to choose another slot. No problem for me. After I had fixed with him another timing, he emailed me again and said that he needed to change one more time. Hence, I had to propose another timing for him. On my schedule there was a participant with pending status and so I decided to ring him up. The problem with calling people is pronouncing their names correctly, in the French way of course. Laurent sounds very different in English and French. So is Nicolas. And Jean-Marie.
When I first sent out the email requesting people to do experiment, the response was almost instantaneous. Now, it seemed like these are the only people that I would be getting. Just 7 on my list so far. I needed 26 people in total! Therefore, I sent out a 2nd request again this time with a bit of pleading tone. Instead of inviting people to come and do the experiment, I almost sounded like calling out for help. Then Mr. Giant came to my room and said he can help with the experiment. But too bad he is in my project team and hence not eligible as I needed people who have completely no knowledge of my work. But if worst come to worst, I have to mobilize the people of the team but that would be the very last resort as I do not want to ruin the results. Mr. Giant then said that the 2 missing discs for the anime he lent me were back again. They were in fact with another colleague. So he would bring them tomorrow. Great, now I would have the complete set.
I am really quite worried that I couldn’t find enough participants for my experiments. I have quite a lot of work to do after those experiments and I can only start doing them after all the experiments are cleared. Hopefully tomorrow there would more people replying to me. If not I would have to go to every level and look for those PhD students. If I still can’t get enough people, I would have to send out an email to my colleagues in the team to spread the word around. Maybe I would do that straightaway tomorrow. There is another thing that is bugging me. I haven’t been assessed yet by my sup because those forms still haven’t arrived. And now my sup is gone. Today I saw some letters in my sup’s letterbox and I guess one of them must be the forms. I have to ask the team leader to assess me if I am able to catch him first. He is always so busy. Although Anatole had told him to put everything as “fine” for my assessment, I still wish that it is my sup who is doing the assessment for me. Hope I can get rid of these 2 bugs at work soon.
