22 March - At Ease With Life (Day 63)

After I had sent out my photos every week, my friends would either email or msn me telling me how nice the pics were, envious that I am enjoying life here while they are struggling with work, exams or FYPs. I am glad that my friends are no longer worried for me because in the beginning, my blog is really very cham. Like I was dying in France. Although I am still very lonely here, I have learnt to make myself happy while being alone. Moreover, I can now say that some of my colleagues have become my friends through lunchtime chatting and soccer games. At least I don’t have to say “we are just colleagues, not friends” (copy from Zoe Tay and Fann Wong some years ago). I also used to tell other people that Gary and I are just roommates, not friends. Of course I was joking lah. After replying some emails, I get on to work but with little progress on the coding of technique 1. I almost wanted to declare that the coding is impossible for me but told myself not to give up so easily. I shall try again after lunch.

At the corridor, the few of us were waiting for some other colleagues to finish up their last bit of work before going for lunch. Jaroslav wasn’t joining us because he had just returned from French class and had his lunch. I asked why is he still taking classes even though he can speak French. He said because he felt it boring just coming to work everyday. While waiting, Nicolas said that I should go to Dinard, which is a beach resort. The beach again! The French really fancy the beach and the sea a lot. By the way, Nicolas is from Dinard so that’s why he recommended me to go there. Perhaps I would go during summer so that I can see bikini babes. My colleagues were asking me who were the beautiful girls in the pic. I said I had a mission to take pictures of beautiful French girls to show my friends. Finally everyone was ready and we set off for lunch. During lunch, I wanted to ask Mr. Giant whether he is still interested in going to the Forest of Broceliande with me. But I had no chance because the 2 Gao Xiao Tian Wang, Jean-Marie and Sebastien were chattering all the way. A bit like Fan and Loi combo, the French version of course. Too bad I don’t know the language, if not I think my Gao Xiao power can win them. But then again, I have changed into a more solemn man now. hehe.

After lunch, I made another call to Thai Airways just to be doubly sure that hui’s flight was also included although I was pretty confident that I done that yesterday. But this is really serious matter so no harm calling again. I am fortunate to know almost everyone in the team so I could just use anyone of their office phone. I didn’t want to bother Mr. Giant and Mathieu again for the same thing so I went to Nicolas’ office. The Thai Airways really got a shortage of manpower because I had to wait for 10min before my line gets picked up. But their service was always courteous and luckily this time it wasn’t the guy who answered my call yesterday. It was another lady. After the call, I went back to work, this time, working on the coding of technique 2 because I was sick of doing the first one. I wasn’t sure if I should thank my sup for giving me various different tasks to do over this month. In a way, I can switch here and there whenever I am stuck and wouldn’t be too bored. Just hope that in the end, something gets done.

Towards the end of the day, I was again planning the end tour and it was really very difficult. This is the first time I am planning a tour, and there are just so much things to consider, accom, transport, time, accessibility and money. But if one is rich, then everything would be simpler. In the end, I decided to split the task into 2. I would find out more about the northern Europe (Paris, London, Belgium, Holland, Loire Valley) and I would leave Marseille, Nice, Geneva, Grenoble, Pisa, Rome to hui. Hopefully by Fri, all the destinations could be finalized and we could really plan in detail. Back in INSA, when I switched on the lights in my room, one of them fused. Sian! That meant I have to call the repairman. I shall ask my colleague to help me call the service tomorrow because again I can’t speak French. Don’t really want to waste my time to learn how to ask for repair service in French. Anyway, even if I can speak, it would only be a one-way communication as I wouldn’t be able to understand what the other is trying to tell me.
