10 April - Bridget Jones Diary (Day 82)

I woke up at 10 this morning and finally felt that I had some rest. Since Thursday till now I was continuously occupied; soccer game, farewell dinner, Oceanopolis; and didn’t even have time to read my San Guo Yan Yi for a few days. Now finally on Sunday I could take a break. I wanted to sleep for a little while more but thought that I really shouldn’t. 10am was just nice. I still had yesterday’s journal to write which I had postponed till now. I wrote my journal until lunch and went to cook. Glad to realize that no one has been eating my pasta sauce. I would use a marker and make a mark on the bottle everytime I make spaghetti. Perhaps I would buy some more fridge food on Tuesday. But I think the school holidays are coming soon again and normally the residents will be told to clear the fridge for that one week. I shall wait and see.

After lunch, I touched up on my tour plan as I needed to send it to hui by tomorrow. I didn’t add anything to it; just made it more readable and less messy. Then I went down to the multimedia centre and uploaded my journal, tour plan and pictures. However, I didn’t dare stay there for too long. Just upload and leave. As usual the bunch of Chinese was playing LAN game and was making a nuisance of themselves. After I had done that, I went back and clean up my room. I suddenly felt that perhaps I should record a video of myself here, speaking about my life and experience in France esp. now that I am at the halfway mark. So I switched on the camera and began recording right away. The memory only lasted 4 min and I didn’t speak much. But it was funny to watch myself when I loaded the video onto the laptop. I sounded fake and pretentious, and it was really weird. I didn’t rehearse or pause or repeat the recording. It was impromptu and I felt that I was acting unnaturally in front of the camera. But it was quite fun. Maybe I could send it to hui.

In the late afternoon, I watched South Park but it was all in French! Nicholas told me it was in English! Have to return to him tomorrow as it would be useless for me. Then I had an early dinner and after that watched Bridget Jones’ Diary I. I am quite afraid that I would become like her in future. Really have to do something fast, esp. now that I am still in uni. Unless something drastic happens, I am well on my way towards Bridget’s life and the journal that I am writing now could be the prequel to the Tan Chee Hian’s Diary that I would write in future. Renee played the role convincingly and although she is a Texan, she purposely went to England and stayed there for a few months in order to pick up their accent. And Hugh Grant of course had an English accent and he can speak French too; which he did for some parts of the interview. On the surface, Bridget Jones was perhaps portrayed as a loser but she had her own dignity and was not so much of an idiot after all. It was a light piece of comedy but was also kind of a serious reminder to those women in their 30s or going to turn 30 soon.

What’s on the agenda for next week would be:

1. Clarify all doubts on VISA, get my resident card and ask about CAF
2. Carry out more experiments and code exp 5
3. Finish up my report which I would use an hour each day in office to do
4. Finalise on the tour plan
5. Plan for my Saturday trip which most likely would be to Nantes.

This is a lot of work and should keep me occupied throughout the week.
